Kim Benson is an independent professional land use consultant with fifteen years of first-hand experience making land use planning decisions in the Islands Trust Area. 
The Islands Trust  is a unique form of local government with a legislated mandate to preserve and protect the internationally significant Gulf Islands which are located in the Strait of Georgia and Howe Sound, off the Southwest coast of British Columbia, Canada.

Kim has a comprehensive understanding of the Islands Trust system of government. 
Between 1993 and 2008, Kim served five consecutive terms as one of the 26 elected members of the Islands Trust Council, and as one of two locally elected trustees for the Gambier Island Local Trust Area. Kim Benson was on the Islands Trust Executive Committee for a total of nine years and served as the elected Chair of the Islands Trust Council during the 2005-2008 term of office. She also served for six years as a board member of the Islands Trust Fund conservation land trust. 

 

Kim has an extensive record of success in helping island communities to resolve land use issues in a creative yet practical manner.
Kim is adept at finding innovative win-win solutions to challenging and complex problems. Highly skilled at facilitating stakeholder consultations, inter-agency liaison processes, and small or large meetings of all kinds. Kim has worked constructively and cooperatively with all levels of government, non-profit and private sector organizations, groups and individuals. 


During her tenure as an Islands Trustee, Kim helped bring about legislative change to enable property tax incentives for voluntary private land stewardship by spearheading the creation, development and successful implementation of the Islands Trust Natural Area Protection Tax Exemption Program (NAPTEP) - the first property tax incentive for the voluntary conservation of natural areas on private land in British Columbia.
    

Kim Benson has a life-long association with the islands in the Trust Area - a family history of six generations on Gambier Island and four on Keats. 
She cares about the islands and is committed to, and respectful of the unique beauty and character of each island and its community. In addition, Kim has over 20 years of hands-on experience in on-island construction trades. She is also an artist, illustrator, writer and musician.
